Kimpton’s Hotel Palomar Phoenix at CityScape Opens This Summer;
Brings New Energy to Downtown

Walking in through the gates of Barolo, the latest addition to the list of fine dining locations in the city, one would have expected the obvious candlelit indoor arrangement. But then, one would have been completely off the mark.

At Barolo’s launch in sector F-8 on Friday, it was not just the pizza that was Italian. Nida Ali, the owner of Barolo, actually brought a slice of Venice to Isloo. the restaurant has indoor seating in a single story building with a separate glass-walled pizzeria set up in the back, but it’s the pool next to the pizzeria that caught every eye that came in. there are five stationary gondolas set up to seat four people each, around a bridge leading to a romantic table for two on a little island in the centre of the pool, the walls around it showing a cityscape of the city of bridges.

Rezz of Rezz Events was impressed by the decor and expressed his happiness at “the new places opening in Isloo”.

“We have seen so many outlets and eating places open over the last few years, which shows the growth of the capital as a metropolis,” he added.

The menus for the fine dining sections and the pizzeria will be varied. Beyond the obvious listing of authentic Italian-style pizzas on the menu, the pizzeria — which will open from next weekend and will operate from noon to 5pm — will also serve burgers and snacks, with the smoked salmon burgers a standout on the menu.

While the pizzeria is furnished with cane chairs, the formal seating arrangement in the main fine dining area — complete with a private room for those uncomfortable around prying eyes — is ideal for dinners.

A meal at the pizzeria can cost around Rs1,000 per head, while a meal in the fine dining section will cost Rs1,500 or more.

Leather-quilted doors in the fine dining area welcome guests into the cigar room, equipped with comfortable couches and lounge-like seating, which would attract anyone, cigar aficionado or not.

Nida Ali said that it will have its own menu from next week and will operate from noon to 11pm. however, for this week it will only be open during hours when the fine dining hall is operating: noon to 3pm for lunch and 7pm to 11pm for dinner.

“This is definitely my new hangout spot. it is ideal for anyone who wants an exclusive setting for a casual evening,” said fashion designer Pashmina Ahmed, while appreciating the delectable testers served at the launch, including Italian-style pizzas, fettuccini in white sauce, bruschetta, and stuffed mushrooms and salmon salad on toothpicks.

Socialites, diplomats, bureaucrats came for the launch of the new Italian restaurant. Light Italian music was playing in the background as the guests mingled and checked the place out.

For authentic Italian approval, the Express Tribune sought out Fredrico Bianchi, the head of the economic and commercial office at the Italian embassy.  he said he “really liked” the set up and found it innovative. Bianchi, who is fond of cooking, also approved of the authentic Italian food label, saying, “There is no overdoing of the spices…it’s very simple and tastes like actual Italian food.”

Now a new generation of home decorators and stylemakers is updating the look. Country Living magazine fills pages with bright colors, crisp graphic prints, tag-sale side tables and smart mid-century sofas. there are still great baskets, but nowadays the duck's more likely to be part of a hip new wallpaper.

call it Modern Country or Farmhouse Chic – it's sparer and less cluttered than the old Country, but no less welcoming. it honors Country's homespun roots without sending us too literally back to the past.

Well-worn, often utilitarian elements from the farm house, barn and small-town store blend with contemporary furnishings and finishes, making it all look fresh and interesting. Becky Cunningham, a home decorator near Shreveport, La., fell in love with vintage stuff during her first visit to a flea market in Canton, Texas. That's where she found an old cowboy's bathtub that now holds extra blankets in her bedroom.

The room's transformation, which includes snowy white paint, a chandelier and luxurious white bed linens, is chronicled on her blog, "Buckets and Burlap." an unusual focal point is a gray, weather-beaten headboard.

"We used 100-year-old lumber taken from an old shack on my husband's aunt's farm," says Cunningham.

Redoing a bathroom in Ojai, Calif., Kelley Davis-Motschenbacher used a timeworn pine table as a vanity, but dropped in a sleek modern washbowl and tap. she fronted a new closet with a scraped-up vintage door, embellishing it with a cast-iron bird knocker. Glossy white subway tiles and marble flooring blend with harvest baskets and vintage artwork to make a luxurious yet homey bathroom that was mostly sourced from garage sales, Home Depot and the Internet.

Garage sales, flea markets and online sites are good sources for Country items, but you can also find newly made pieces that evoke the vibe.

Dustin Glasscoe's furniture studio, Vermont Farm Table, is filled with bar stools, benches, dining tables and bookcases made of reclaimed pine. The patina of the wood, coupled with Glasscoe's craftsmanship, makes for furniture that's warm and approachable.

Urbanites may not have ready access to vintage goods, but the look's easy to replicate with stuff from stores – Wisteria's iron cabinet bins and World Market's woven reed baskets make great storage; IKEA's got flat-woven, striped cotton rugs; Pottery Barn has antique glass pickling jars, wooden dough bowls and grain-sack throw pillows.

Barry Whaling and his wife, Leigh, were new to Charlotte when they spotted the prominent lot on Lake Wylie from the water.

The Winston-Salem couple weren’t steeped in Charlotte’s history, recent or more distant, when they bought the property on which to build a dream home. They learned quickly.

Turned out the Tega Cay lot was the site of the home once owned by Charlotte Hornets founder and owner George Shinn. the Hornets began play in 1988. the house changed hands after Shinn and his team left town in 2002, following sexual assault charges against Shinn and declining attendance for the Hornets.

Today, by the way, Shinn lives outside Nashville, Tenn. Shinn, who had prostate cancer, started the TruLight Foundation in 2011 to promote healthy lifestyles and educate people about cancer.

Then lightning during a thunderstorm in 2008 sparked a fire that destroyed the home. it turned out that a mosaic Charlotte Hornets NBA team logo in the bottom of the swimming pool was still intact.

The Whalings decided to save it as they learned about the city’s connection to the hornet symbol, which dates back to the Revolutionary War.

He hadn’t heard much about those heady early years of the city’s first NBA franchise – when the Hornets got a standing ovation after a 40-point loss – but he has now.

The Whalings recently moved into their dramatic new home – and, thanks to extra care by all involved, the teal and purple hornet gleams on the bottom of the restored pool.

Designed for the lot

There are a few other chapters to this story, of course. When the Whalings asked about buying the lot, they discovered that architect Harry Schrader had designed a dramatic contemporary house especially for the site. the previous owner had commissioned the design before deciding to sell.

The plans became part of the transaction, and the Whalings made only a few changes. the house contains more than 7,500 square feet, and it’s stunning. it sits on a high, steep lot overlooking the lake. “Imagining this house,” Schrader said, “I was imagining the wings of a bird coming to rest on the top of this hill.” Because the house accommodates the steep slope, one section is a single story while the tallest is four stories. it contains five bedrooms. the exterior is stone, stucco and fiber cement siding, and the dominant colors are vivid blues.

Whaling, Schrader and builder Russell Zavatsky of Zar Custom Homes in Charlotte agree that the most dominant feature, especially from the water, is a serpentine glass wall that stretches some 40 feet long. “The curved glass is floor to ceiling,” said Whaling, who’s in the audio-visual industry. “Hands down, it really is THE feature in this house.”

Zavatsky was taken with a tear-shaped section of raised granite countertop in the kitchen. “This teardrop looks like it’s free-floating,” he said. “It’s up at bar height … so you can pull stools up to it … and the kitchen faces out onto the main channel on Lake Wylie.”

Zavatsky built the house in only nine months. he says a house of this size and complexity could easily take up to two years. but the Whalings wanted to get into their dream home as soon as possible.

He took his time with that pool on the banks of Lake Wylie, though, after the Whalings asked him to save that hornet.

“We kept some of the shell of the pool,” he said. “We were able to work around the hornet. We surgically cut way around the hornet, and saved it.” Tom Sorensen contributed.
